You are not your mind

Posted by Patrice Smith

"I think therefore I am" The single most erroneous statement - spoken by the philosopher Descartes.
We must understand that we are not our minds! The mind is but a separate entity - an instrument given to us for us to use. The quote above equates thinking with being and identity with thinking, which is erroneous. For it is the mind that thinks and not you. It is an arduous task, but try to separate your mind (your thoughts) from you. Stop, and listen to your thoughts (notice, I did not say listen to yourself?). It is true that the mind is a powerful thing, so powerful that it consumes you - it takes you over - it controls you.

The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very
destructive. To put it more accurately, it is not so much that you use your mind wrongly -
you usually don't use it at all. It uses you. This is the disease. You believe that you are your
mind. This is the delusion. The instrument has taken you over (excerpt from The Power of Now
              by Eckharte Tolle).

Interesting Annie. I wish you mentioned the exact Chinese translation. But, some of our most spiritual teachers came out of China, and India.

I think one of the hardest things for people (including myself) to do is first realize that they are not defined by their thoughts and then secondly be conscious and aware of instances in which our emotions are affected negatively by all these thoughts.

It truly is, and to do so requires un-doing a lifetimes worth of what and how we know things to be. We have to associate what truth is to us, as false which is really difficult. It's like telling ourselves that a spoon is not really a spoon and something that is used to eat with but rather, something seemingly unfathomably different with an entire different function. Not the easiest thing to accomplish.

for those of us struggling with depressing thought, knowing you are NOT your thoughts is liberating beyond words!
