What it takes to "Make It"

Posted by Dr. Patrice Smith

As we all may have come to realize by now, the road to success isn't easy. It is hardly ever a straight path, but rather comes with many speed bumps, hills, mountains, detours, you name it. It is true that success can only be defined by an individual. However, there are a number of fool proof guidelines or key ingredients needed to help you get there. I like to refer to these guidelines as the four D's: Desire, Decision, Determination, and Discipline.

Desire - This is the most essential of all the D's. This is where it all begins. There first has to be a deep yearning for something, an insatiable thirst that resides deep within the girth of ones loins; you have to crave that which is wanted so badly so as to be willing to sacrifice anything for it. This is where the journey begins.

Decision - Once there is that desire for something, it becomes decision making time. You want to accomplish a specific goal and now you need to decide how to do it - a method. You also need to decide on the sacrifices that need to be made and re-adjust if needs be.

Determination - Anyone can have goals! Once there is that burning desire to accomplish something and all the necessary decisions have been made, it is your determination that will keep you on the path of fulfilling it. This is where strength and fortitude helps you overcome the obstacles you will meet on your way.

Discipline - This is usually the most difficult of all D's. We may have the best of intentions, but a moment of weakness can throw us off track. However, with self-control and restraint to make sacrifices and stick to the plan we decide upon, we surely can reach our goal, and alas - success!

Yes. I think the fourth you were missing was "decision." This is very important as the decisions you make during this process is very crucial. They will either make or break you.
